On a holiday with children, how the day flows matters more than the hotel’s star count. The seven points below take a few minutes on the booking screen and change the tone of the whole trip.

1. Child age policy

Properties offer free stays up to a certain age, and the limit differs from one to the next. Enter ages correctly at booking — a correction at the desk becomes a payment.

2. Room layout and extra beds

For a family of four, a “room for 4” is not always the same thing: at one property it means two separate bedrooms, at another a sofa bed or a rollaway. If you need connecting rooms, note it in the booking — it is subject to availability, never guaranteed.

3. Pool and safety

Whether the children’s pool is separate, the depth, whether a lifeguard is on duty and the pool hours are all on the room page. Slides usually have a height limit.

4. Meal times and children’s menu

With small children, dinner time is critical. Check when the buffet opens and whether there is a children’s menu or baby food. At all-inclusive properties, snack hours take the pressure off the day.

5. Kids’ club and age range

Properties with a kids’ club normally set a minimum age, and infants are outside it. Whether the club runs daily or only in season also varies.

6. Distance and transfers

If the airport transfer is long, the first day with small children largely goes on the road. Walking distance to the beach, sloping terrain and pushchair access shape daily comfort too.

7. Cancellation flexibility

Plans with children change more often. If your dates are not fixed, a free-cancellation rate is usually worth the price difference.

Frequently asked questions

Is a cot free?

At most properties yes, but numbers are limited and it must be requested at booking.

What if I enter a child’s age incorrectly?

You pay the difference at check-in, and in some cases the room type has to change.

Family room or two separate rooms?

With small children a family room is usually more practical; with older children two connecting rooms can be more comfortable, and the price gap is not always large.
