Where you stay in Istanbul decides which side of the city you see. Stay in Sultanahmet and you walk to Hagia Sophia before breakfast; stay in Kadıköy and your day starts on a ferry. Below are six neighbourhoods sorted by who they suit.
In short
- First visit, and you want to walk the historic peninsula? Sultanahmet.
- For restaurants and evenings out, the Beyoğlu–Galata–Karaköy stretch.
- Kadıköy is more local and usually better value, with a ferry across to the European side.
- Traffic is a real cost; being near a metro, tram or ferry line often matters more than the neighbourhood itself.
Where to stay
Sultanahmet
The heart of the historic peninsula. Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace and the Basilica Cistern are all walkable. It quietens down in the evening and the range of restaurants is narrower than elsewhere. The most practical base for a first visit.
Suits: First-time visitors, museum-heavy trips
Beyoğlu and Galata
İstiklal Avenue, the Galata Tower and the streets around them. The densest concentration of restaurants, bars and galleries — and correspondingly noisy. Factor that in when you pick a street-facing room.
Suits: Nightlife, food, repeat visitors
Karaköy
Below Galata, on the Golden Horn. A port district that has filled with design hotels and coffee shops in recent years. The tram and a ferry pier are here, so both the historic peninsula and Beyoğlu are easy to reach.
Suits: Transport, design hotels
Beşiktaş and Nişantaşı
Close to the Bosphorus, business and shopping oriented. Nişantaşı is the shopping district; Beşiktaş has a ferry pier and busy streets. Fewer tourists than the historic peninsula.
Suits: Shopping, business travel, Bosphorus
Kadıköy
The Asian side. A strong food scene and a mostly local crowd. The ferry to the European side takes about twenty minutes and can be the best part of the day. Accommodation is generally better value.
Suits: Local feel, longer stays, budget
Şişli and Levent
The business district along the metro line. Not appealing for sightseeing, but airport and metro links are strong — a sensible base for a short work trip.
Suits: Business travel, airport connections

When to go
April–June and September–October are Istanbul at its best: comfortable for walking, long daylight. July–August is hot and humid, and the historic peninsula is tiring in the afternoon. November–March is cold and wet, but museums are empty, rooms cost less, and the city’s own rhythm comes through.
April brings tulip season and public holidays, which pushes demand up; booking early makes a visible difference then.
Before you book
Cancellation terms belong to the rate you pick, not to the hotel; the same room is often sold under several different conditions. Reading the cancellation line next to the total, and the “payable at the property” item, prevents most of the surprises that come later.

Frequently asked
First time in Istanbul — where should I stay?
Sultanahmet or Karaköy. Sultanahmet puts you within walking distance of the main museums; Karaköy connects to the historic peninsula by tram and to Beyoğlu on foot, and is livelier in the evening.
Does it make sense to stay in Kadıköy?
For longer stays, and for seeing the city off the tourist route, yes. The ferry adds around forty minutes to a day’s plan, but it is the most pleasant way to move around Istanbul.
Should I stay near the airport?
Usually not. Istanbul Airport is well outside the city, so staying nearby means being far from everything you came to see. If you have an early flight, a district on the metro line such as Şişli or Levent is a better compromise.
Is a Bosphorus-view room worth it?
The difference between a view room and a standard one is real in most properties. Before deciding, check which floor the photo was taken from and whether a building sits in front — listing images tend to come from the best room in the house.
Is there an accommodation tax in Istanbul?
Türkiye applies an accommodation tax, and it is shown as a separate line on the invoice. Rates can change by legislation, so the most reliable figure is the total on the booking screen.
