In Dubai, picking an area decides how much of your day goes on the road. The city stretches along a long coastal strip, and crossing from one end to the other can take an hour in traffic. Below are six areas sorted by who they suit.
In short
- If the beach comes first: Dubai Marina, JBR or Palm Jumeirah.
- To stay around the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall: Downtown.
- For better value and the older city: Deira and Bur Dubai.
- The metro’s red line runs along the coast; staying near it cuts taxi costs noticeably.
Where to stay
Downtown Dubai
The centre, with the Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall and the fountain show. The area where you can do the most on foot — but there is no beach. Hotel density and demand are both high.
Suits: First visit, shopping, skyline views
Dubai Marina and JBR
Towers around an artificial marina, next to the JBR beach and its pedestrian strip. Beach, restaurants and hotels in one place, and lively in the evening. Metro and tram connections.
Suits: Beach plus city, families, evenings out
Palm Jumeirah
The palm-shaped artificial island. Large resorts and private beaches. Transport within the island is limited and leaving it usually means a taxi, so this becomes a resort-based holiday.
Suits: Resort stays, honeymoons, private beach
Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim
A lower-rise stretch along the coast, with public beaches and the classic Burj Al Arab view. Calmer than the Marina and far fewer towers.
Suits: Quiet beaches, families, longer stays
Deira and Bur Dubai
The old city on both banks of Dubai Creek — the spice and gold souks and the historic Al Fahidi quarter. Generally better value, no beach, and a completely different texture from modern Dubai.
Suits: Budget, souks, old city
Business Bay
Just south of Downtown, a newer tower district along the canal. Walking distance or a short taxi from Downtown, usually at a slightly lower rate.
Suits: Close to Downtown, better value

When to go
November–March is the comfortable season: daytime temperatures suit being outside and the sea is usable. It is also the busiest and most expensive period. June–September is very hot and humid, so plans shift indoors — but rates drop clearly. April–May and October sit in between: hot but manageable.
During Ramadan some restaurants change their daytime service and the rules on eating and drinking in public work differently. The dates move each year, so check before you travel.
Before you book
Cancellation terms belong to the rate you pick, not to the hotel; the same room is often sold under several different conditions. Reading the cancellation line next to the total, and the “payable at the property” item, prevents most of the surprises that come later.

Frequently asked
Which area is best for the beach?
JBR and Dubai Marina are the most practical if you want restaurants and hotels next to the sand. Palm Jumeirah gives you a private-beach resort but makes leaving the island harder. Jumeirah is calmer and close to public beaches.
Is the metro enough, or should I rent a car?
The red line runs along the coast and links Downtown, the Marina and the airport. If your plans sit along that line, metro plus taxis is usually enough. For a desert trip or the neighbouring emirates, a car or a tour makes more sense.
Does it make sense to visit in summer?
Rates drop clearly, but between June and September spending the day outdoors is hard. It works if your plans are malls, museums and indoor activities; it does not if you came for the beach.
Is there a tourism fee on hotels?
Hotels charge a per-night tourism fee, and it is usually not included in the booking total — it is collected at check-in. The amount varies by room class, so check the “payable at the property” line on the booking screen.
Which area suits families?
JBR and Dubai Marina: beach, promenade and restaurants together, with no car needed for the evening. For a resort-style trip, Palm Jumeirah — though most meals will then be at the hotel.
